Many people believe that, once you have children, you can no longer have a nicely decorated home. It is not true that you need to lock everything in the closets when the kids come along; here are some tips that you can follow to keep your home looking stylish.
The Toddlers Are Here!
When you think of a toddler, you need to remember that they love to grab everything and place it into their mouth. Of course, having breakables or precious items at their level is not a good idea, but you can move these items up out of reach and still be able to enjoy them. Consider rearranging things; when you move the breakables up, then replace them with non-breakable items, such as metal, silver, wood, or baskets. These are all great materials to use on your lower surfaces, such as coffee tables.
The toddler's bedroom is a great place to have soft toys and books within the child's reach. Store the breakable keepsakes and picture frames up high, on shelves that are out of reach. Remember to always check the "tip-over potential" of any furniture in the bedroom. If there is a chance of tipping, make sure that the furniture is securely attached to the wall.
If you are a fan of cutesy frames, a child's room is the perfect place to display pictures in cute flower picture frames or sweet heart picture frames.
As They Grow...
Once your little one starts to mature, there are some easy things that you can do to change the nursery into a child's room.
Replace a rocking chair with a comfy upholstered one for reading.
Many changing tables are set atop a complete dresser; remove the changing table top and hang some wall shelves above and you'll get several more years out of the dresser.
Take out the baby fabrics and bring in some more mature patterns. Just be sure to match the colors with the present color scheme so that you don't have to repaint.
Once you are no longer using the big floor toys, pass them on and bring in a cute little table and chair set. Make sure that the chairs are sturdy. This will be a wonderful place for your child to play games, have tea parties, or draw pictures.
Don't forget to change out the wallpaper if it has a baby theme. A good replacement would be a washable vinyl wallpaper that coordinates with the colors in the room.
Closed Storage
No matter your situation, it seems like storage space is tight when you have kids. If they have seasonal clothes that need to be stored, consider storing them on a closed bin on the top shelf of the closet.
Open shelving is wonderful for displaying items and easy accessible things, but too much clutter can create a visual mess. Solve this problem by hiding things in a cupboard with doors that close. If you don't have enough floorspace in the bedroom, consider a cabinet that will fit inside the closet. Just be careful when considering something like a trunk, which seems like a good place to store things but can cause injuries when the lid slams down on little fingers. - 42635
